"Third Rail of Journalism"

LOS ANGELES, Tuesday, May 26, 2015 -- Steve Jaffe, a blogger/writer for the Huffington Post, and media expert in the field of crisis management, who served as a consultant to President Clinton's task force during the Starr investigation, addressed the highly controversial question whether or not Google is responsible for defamatory articles listed in its searches.

Jaffe compared the late House Speaker, "Tip" O'Neill's often quoted metaphor regarding the 'Third Rail of Politics' on the perils of changing the Social Security System to the First Amendment as the 'Third Rail of Journalism' in dealing with Google's database regarding negative and defamatory articles revealed in searches on American citizens.

"Despite our laws of defamation, libel and slander, which govern the legitimate media and offer protection to individuals against malicious statements about them in the press, Google can publish anything," Jaffe says. "Google is clearly the most valuable tool for research ever invented," Jaffe says, "but the courts have ruled that it's not responsible for what it publishes because it's not legally a publisher."
